Any idea what caused the 'chipping' ?
The stone itself maybe?

They talked a bit about the first cut creating a 'firebreak' to 
prevent chipping when you get to actually cutting the 'v' 
edges,  They don't say it explicitly, but It seems we should
make this first cut, then cut the 2 sides of the 'V'.  Is that how
you read it?  
It is an important point - but it's little unclear from the book....
