Dear fellow diallists,

I recall a thread on this list a while back in which someone expressed
interest in how to make a ring dial.

I recently obtained a copy of William Emerson's work on dialling, published
in 1770, that gives instructions and a diagram for just such a dial.

Although I doubt anyone on this list would really be interested, ; ) I
have scanned the pages in this book which contain the directions and the
diagram for making a ring dial.

Please find attached the file 1770ring.zip which contains five files (four
text and one diagram). All of the files are GIF's and you'll need to use
some type of image viewer with zoom capability. I used ACDSee with much
success.

There are some parts of the instructions which don't make perfect sense to
me, and there is one line in the text which I believe HAS to be a printing
error. The line which begins at the bottom of page 142 reads:

" and lat. ff, gg, or kk, bc, the breadth of the rim. "

I think this must be a misprint and my guess is that it should read:

" and let ff, gg, or kk be the breadth of the rim. "

If anyone thinks I am mistaken, PLEASE let me know what the line really means.

I hope the attached file generates an active thread as I would be most
interested in hearing comments from many of you.
