I posted a query last week regarding an antique sundial engraved "Vaack
Symmes". I also contacted email addresses of people named Symmes and
one responded with the conclusion that since the coordinates are E,W,S,N
it must have been made in an English-speaking country. I am embarrassed
to say this never occurred to me and now seems so obvious -- but, does
anyone know whether non-English-speaking countries adopted the same
coordinate markings or, were they typically in the local language which
would be slightly different. Given the 51 degree latitude, I am
specifically curious about Belgium and Germany.

Thanks again,

John Hastings
