Ray, The word "analemma" has gone through a number of different uses or meanings. Long before it had anything to do with the figure eight curve we associate it with today, it referred to a graphical construction studied by the ancient Greeks and equivalent to what we would today call an orthographic projection. The analemmatic dial is a sundial that results from the orthographic projection of the celestial sphere onto the horizontal plane.
