Hello,
A noon canon was set up in Paris at the
Palais-Royal in 1786. It's been working more or
less regularly for a century, giving Paris time.
It was stopped in 1911 when France adopted GMT as
official time. Abandoned for years, it was
replaced in 1975. But as far as I know it never
worked very well and it was stolen a few years
ago.
A paper in the french journal "L'Astronomie" in
1979 gives all the details. I can send you a copy
if you like.
