This would be the same formula that calculates the length of the
bannister on a spiral staircase.   That calculation I found last year in
a staircase problem from the web.   I"ll look again tonight and if no
one has responded, will send the formulae tomorrow.

I think this is underspecified; what spiral?  Do you have a formula
for the curve?
