Thanks. The original idea came from an image I saw on the inside
of the dust jacket of Wintrop W. Dolan's "A Choice of Sundials", a very
nice book by the way. No source or description of the image was ever
given by Dolan in the book. One possibility is that it may have been
originally published by F.J. Britten in the sundial section of his "Old
Clocks & Their Makers". Gordon Uber has a nice web page about the
sundial section of Britten's text with a copy of the image (figure 3),

However, Dolan does not cite Britten anywhere that I've found.
Does anyone know for sure who/where/when the image may first have
appeared?
