I agree that we are remise in not properly celebrating the winter solstice. It is the root of all traditional festivals at this time. At latitude 51 N, I know the horror of watching the sun sink lower each day as the dark, cold winter approaches. The day when the sun stops sinking and starts to return with its life giving light and warmth is magical moment, even in these modern times. Think of the magic for our fore bearers who were much more in tune with the cycles of nature than we are. No wonder the winter solstice is celebrated as a time of light, joy and re-birth in all northern cultures, from the yuletide of the Norsemen, the candles of Santa Lucia, the menorah of Hanukkah, Saturnalia of the Romans and the birth of Christ for Christians. Celebrate the return of the sun, 22 December at 01:56 UT (8:56 PM EST, 6:56 PM MST 21 Dec).
