Following a trip to India, Harold Brandmaier wrote an article on the Famous Sundials of India for the December 1995 Compendium (V. 2, No. 4, p. 4), at the end of which he compared three large dials: the Team Disney building sundial at Lake Buena Vista, FL, Augustus' horizontal dial, and the Brihat Samrat Yantra in Jaipur. All three are drawn isometricaly to the same scale. The Augustus dial appears biggest in lateral extent; at 120 feet tall, the Disney appears to be the tallest of the three; and the Jaipur dial appears to be the largest if one considers both height and lateral extent. The Disney dial appears largest by volume, but the Jaipur dial might be considered to be the most accurate. It is clearly a remarkable dial that has stood the test of time. It remains to be seen how long the Disney dial lasts, being composed of poured concrete, styrofoam, plaster, and painted metal for the gnomon. I have a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records certificate stating that the Disney dial is the world's largest sundial, but what do they know? -- Ross McCluney Cocoa, FL
