Piero,
The "Statutes (Definition of Time) Act introduced "Greenwich Mean
Time to Britain by Act of Parliament in August 1880. "Dublin Mean Time"
was used in Ireland. The "Time (Ireland) Act" in 1916 made Greenwich Mean
Time the 'legal' time in Ireland also.
The early introduction in Britain was probably hastened by the opening of
the 110 mile long (approx.) Great Western Railway from London to Bristol
in 1835. The difficulties which arose in the intervening 45 years when
travelling rapidly east/west and west/east between towns where 'sundial
time' ruled must have been a timetable maker's nightmare. Clocks existed
along the route with extra hands to show both local and railway time
simultaneously.
I'm told that one such clock still exists in Bristol and would be
interested to learn of any others that are still in use.
