A foliot in early mechanical clocks is a horizontal bar which has a weight
hung from each end. Its  purpose is to control  the time the pallets leave
the escape wheel to "escape". The same duty, in more modern clocks, is kept
by pendulums or balance wheels. Hope  to have been of some help.Carlo
