Dear All,

Much has been made of the difficulties in exactly determining where north
is in order to set up a sundial. However, there are designs where this is
not relevant. If a horizontal dial and analematic dial are correctly
delineated on the same dial plate, this plate needs only to be turned until
both dials tell the same time (with suitable allowance for EoT etc.). As a
by-product, the resulting alignment will give you true north! Admittedly
the accuracy will be heavily dependent on how well the dials are made and
adjusted for time of year etc., but this way you need neither compass nor
clock.
