Hello John,

I have no comment to your thoughts about the gnomon's taper angle but if
this angle is very small also the shadow is very small( or even not
present ) and it is hard to see where the endpoint of the shadow is.
If the dial is rather large this will give a misreading.
Perhaps it is better to place on top a little sphere or a disk.
On the dial look for the center of the shadow of this sphere or disk.
Just experiment what's best.

Also the gnomon of the large dial of Emperor Augustus in Rome once
should have had a sphere on top.
