Hi Art Carlson and fellow dialists

After my earlier note about seeing the green flash over a building in
Edinburgh, Art wonders whether it is generally possible to observe the
green sunset flash over nearby buildings. Mostly, probably not. I sent
Art's comments to the originator of the story, Ron Livesey of the
British Astronomical Association and here is his reply:

(quote) I was as surprised as anybody to find I could see the green
flash with a "horizon" so close to me. It may have been a combination
of air conditions and a sharp edge (i.e. a building) to the horizon. I
brought it to the notice of the Royal Meteorological Society, Scottish
Section at a meeting in Edinburgh when atmospheric phenomena were being
discussed.

I have seen the flash on a number of occasions with a distant horizon,
such as the Pentland Hills seen from the royal park at Holyrood and on
sea horizons in Cornwall and Sri Lanka, etc. (unquote)

So I would say it was something of a one-off and the conditions were
about perfect. But let's keep looking.
