11-08-99 Please add the following to the list of FAQ being assembled by John Carmichael:
1. Why is anyone interested in sundials when modern watches and clocks tell time to within seconds? 2. What books are recommended for the beginner? 3. Why is time told a sundial whose shadow casting object is a straight edge, the "style", parallel to Earth's axis independent of the day of the year? 4. To Art Carlson's "What is the biggest sundial?" add " What is the oldest sundial"? Also, how is big defined? 5. As an add-on to FAQ 4, categorize by sundial type, once there is an understanding of sundial types. I've been asked that question relative to horizontal sundials. 6. Why is true North different from magnetic North? 7. Is there a manual that will help me, a do-it-yourselfer, design, construct and install a simple sundial? 8. I'm thinking about buying a sundial for my garden. How do I get started? 9. Now that I've bought a sundial, how do I support it in my garden so that it doesn't shift with time? Good luck John.
