The book, "Latitude Hooks and Azimuth Rings, how to build and use 18 traditional navigational tools", by Dennis Fisher, International Marine/McGraw Hill, 1994, ISBN 0-07-021120-5, has a chapter on the cross-staff, along with chapters on building and using an astrolabe, quadrant, backstaff, sundial, nocturnal, octant, etc.
