Hi Roger,

I too have a copy of "The Amateur Scientist" by C.L. Stong (editor of
the column for many years), hang on to your copy, they're extremely hard
to find these days but still well worth the money if you can find one.
The description of the Schmoyer Sundial, for those who can't find a copy
of the book, appeared in the October '59 edition of Scientific American,
page 185 (easily photocopied at your library). Interestingly, comments
made in the August '59 article (Globe as Sundial) apparently prompted
Schmoyer to submit his design to Stong. It's a small point but the
version of the article that appears in the book is slightly different
than that which originally appeared in SciAm.

Best,

Luke
