"Gnomon: From Pharaohs to Fractals". Midhat J. Gazale. Princeton U. Press,1999. This is a fascinating book: on gnomons as self similar spirals; the golden mean, damped oscillatory systems, fractals, Fibonacci, and much more. Unfortunately, the only section on sundials is p6-7: Egyptian sunclock of 18th dynasty, sundial (oriented) of 19th dynasty, 575 BC sundial ascribed to Anaximander & 'gnomon' was used (=that which allows one to know, literal translation of merkhet). I haven't found the connection between the gnomon of a sundial & 'gnomon' as used above, unless 'gnomon' can mean (in modern terms) indicator, readout gauge, etc. _______________________________________ Peter Abrahams [EMAIL PROTECTED]
