This is a fascinating book: on gnomons as self similar spirals; the golden
mean, damped oscillatory systems, fractals, Fibonacci, and much more.
Unfortunately, the only section on sundials is p6-7: Egyptian sunclock of
18th dynasty, sundial (oriented) of 19th dynasty, 575 BC sundial ascribed
to Anaximander & 'gnomon' was used (=that which allows one to know, literal
translation of merkhet).
I haven't found the connection between the gnomon of a sundial & 'gnomon'
as used above, unless 'gnomon' can mean (in modern terms) indicator,
readout gauge, etc.
