In response to my recent query on the Qumran sundial mr. Reinhold Kriegler from Bremen kindly sent me a copy of a leaflet which dr. Uwe Glessmer had passed around during a lecture on this sundial at the meeting of the Deutschen Sonnenuhrenfreunde at Ilmenau on May 14, 1999.
This leaflet contains a bibliography on the Qumran sundial which can be added to the articles mentioned in my earlier posting and which may be of interest to readers of this list. Albani, M. & Glessmer, U., Un instrument de mesures astronomiques à Qumrân, _Revue Biblique_, 104 (1997), 88-115. Glessmer, U., Horizontal Measuring in the Babylonian Astronomical Compendium MUL.APIN and in the Astronomical Book of 1.En, _Henoch_, 18 (1996), 259-282. Glessmer, U., An Astronomical Measuring Instrument from Qumran, in: D.W. Parry & E. Ulrich (eds), _The Provo International Conference on the Dead Sea Scrolls: Technological Innovations, New Texts and Reformulated Issues_ (E.J. Brill, Leiden [etc.], 1999 [= Studies on the Texts of the Desert of Judah; vol. 30]), pp. 407-442. Glessmer, U., Calendars in the Qumran Scrolls, in: P.W. Flint & J.C. VanderKam (eds), _The Dead Sea Scrolls after Fifty Years: A Comprehensive Assessment_, 2 vols (E.J. Brill, Leiden [etc.], 1998-99), vol. 2, pp. 213-278. VanderKam, J.C., Calendars in the Dead Sea Scrolls: Measuring Time (Routledge, London/New York, 1998), pp. 89-90. In my earlier posting I noted that the Qumran sundial was also mentioned in: A. Avitzour, "An Astronomical measuring instrument from Qumran (probably used as a sundial)", _The Compendium_, 4 (1997), nr. 4(?), ??-??. Unfortunately, this publication is not available in any public library in the Netherlands and I would be most grateful anyone subscribing to _The Compendium_ on this list could check and complete the above reference for me. ================================================================ * Robert H. van Gent * Tel/Fax: 00-31-30-2720269 * * Zaagmolenkade 50 * E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] * * 3515 AE Utrecht * Home page (under construction): * * The Netherlands * http://www.fys.ruu.nl/~vgent/ * ================================================================
