What make is your bubble sextant? I have a Mark IXA from Henry Hughes and Son Ltd. Digging in the library of the (airline)company I work for I found a rather extensive description. In it is also explained how to create the bubble if there is none: it is manipulating the Diaphragm chamber with the large controlknob on the left side. However if the screw in the middle of this knob is broken it will not work anymore because you need a pull-action.
