This can be a two-way problem.  In a lecture for his Mech.Eng degree some 
years ago my son asked for an explanation of a particular point.  The 
lecturer responded by reading his notes again but *in a louder voice!* 
The response being -

"I didn't say that I couldn't HEAR you I said that I didn't UNDERSTAND!"
