Dear All,
I mention the following as an opportunity rather than a 'commercial'.
Many people saw an example of my 'Meridian Alidade' used to lay out a local
meridian to 10' of arc at any time of day when demonstrated by Piers Nicholson
at the 1999 BSS Conference in the other role he devised for determining the
declination of a wall.
Another BSS member has had one of these on order for some while and the time
allocated to make it has arrived. As it is always good sense to make such
items in batches to utilise the same machine settings I am making a batch of
three. It is unlikely that I will be available for any other work before the
end of December 2000 - if you want clients get a website! - so if you're
seriously interested please get in touch as these may be the last I ever make.
If you want to see what it looks like have a look at 'Alid' on my website which
shows the de-luxe version with a swinging-arm vernier.
In use the device is levelled then rotated until a sunray lies on the central
line and the vernier set to zero. The azimuth of the sun from south at that
moment is calculated (software supplied) and the device is rotated through that
angle to align with true north/south. By sighting between the vertical posts
in both directions the meridian line can then be transferred back to the ground
on a long baseline.
No 'curiosity' enquiries please as time isn't something I have a lot of.
