Hello Sundial List,

I've recently acquired a medium size (about 3 ft tall) sculpture made of forged and welded steel. The steel has been wire brushed to a satin finish, which I'd like to retain even though the piece is destined to go outdoors. (I may incorporate it into a large sundial.)

I need suggestions about how to protect the steel from rusting. I'd prefer a durable, thin, clear finish--something which won't darken or turn milky. I've considered using Tung oil, but several coats would be required for adequate protection, resulting in some darkening and a "built-up" appearance.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
