Dear Robert,

In addition to G.R. Kaye's classic work on the observatory of Jaih Singh
II mentioned by Peter Mayer, there is also a more recent study by
Virendra Nath Sarma entitled _Sawai Jai Singh and his Astronomy_,
published in 1995 by Motilal Banarsidass Publishers (Delhi).

Although it received an unfavourable review in a journal that I cannot
remember offhand at the moment (Isis?), it was reviewed more favourably
in the Journal for the History of Astronomy (vol. 27, pp. 87-89) and it
may still be useful for its description of the present-day situation of
Jai Singh's observatories and references to more modern literature.

A popular edition of Kaye's studies on Jai Singh's observatories
entitled _A Guide to the Old Observatories at Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain,
Benares_ was issued by the Superintendent Government Printing Office in
Calcutta in 1920 and is still available as a reprint (I have a 1985
reprint by The Academic Press, Haryana).

Best wishes,
