The North American Sundial Society is very pleased to announce that it has
awarded the first annual Sawyer Dialing Prize to Fer J. deVries of
Eindhoven, Netherlands: In recognition of his many years of dedication to
dialing, and in gratitude for his development of Zonwvlak and his always
helpful encouragement and support of the global dialing community.

In addition to receiving a trophy sundial (by Tony Moss) and certificate,
Fer will be able to direct a cash donation of $200 to a dialing project or
non-profit organization of his choice. He has chosen to designate the
money to benefit the Environmental Design course in the Architecture
Department of UC-Berkeley. Each year this class teaches about 150 students
about sundials and requires them all to design and build a dial.

[More on Fer's acceptance note in an upcoming issue of The Compendium].

Please join all of NASS in congratulating Fer !

Background:

With Fred Sawyer's official retirement from the business world this June,
his family has decided to 'record the event' by instituting an annual award
to be known as The Sawyer Dialing Prize, presented each year by NASS to an
individual for his or her contributions and dedication to dialing and the
dialing community. In addition to an award certificate, the prize will
consist of a trophy sundial specifically made for the occasion with the
signature motto, and a cash prize to be donated to a dialing endeavor or
non-profit organization of the recipient's choice.

The trophy dial this year was designed and constructed by Tony Moss. It is
a beautiful brass equatorial dial which can be adjusted for latitude and
longitude. See the photo on the inside back cover of this issue of The
Compendium.

[Fred Sawyer has had a supply of 7/8" cloisonné (hard enamel) lapel pins of
the NASS logo made. The background colors are sky blue and royal blue,
with lines, analemma and lettering in gold. The pins are for sale in
support of the Prize fund - all proceeds will be turned over to NASS to
help fund future prizes. Anyone wishing to purchase a pin and support the
award process can send a check for $5.00 ($6.00 outside North America) to
Fred Sawyer, 8 Sachem Drive, Glastonbury CT 06033. Please make these
checks out directly to Fred Sawyer (not to NASS).]
