Hi Sara, Fer, John D. and Gianni:

First, thanks Fer for confirming that a monofilar dial does not necessarily
have to have a thread, string or cable gnomon. This was confusing.

Would the "monofilar" classification include both azimuthals and (hour
angle) Singletons?

What should we call the Singleton sundial? According to Sara and Gianni, it
is technically an hour angle horizontal (with pole style) which tells
Standard Time. But it is awkward to describe it as such in our discussions.
We need a term that is short and sweet. I like "monofilar" in that it
describes a Singleton dial in one word, However I also dislike monofilar in
that it seems to require a thread-type gnomon, with isn't so.

I am belaboring this point because I think the Singleton dial is the sundial
that might be the solution to the azimuthal's gnomon height problem. It has
all the advantages of an azimuthal and less of the disadvantages (Although
hour line compression is still a problem on the inner rings).

I think several of us would be interested in constructing a Singleton dial
if we could find a software program for it.

Thanks,

John Carmichael
