What a fine programme that was, called "Longitude", recently shown on UK
TV, starring Michael Gambon as John Harrison and Jeremy Irons as
Lt.-Cdr. R.T. Gould. Message worldwide: if it comes your way and you
care about the means of finding time don't miss it. It showed Harrison
in all his crabbed glory as well as an interesting insight into the
tortured character of Gould, twentieth century restorer of Harrison's
chronometers, dealing with him more fully than in Dava Sobel's book
"Longitude" on which the film was based. Also a portrayal of Nevil
Maskelyne, Astronomer Royal, originator of the "Nautical Almanac and
Astronomical Ephemeris", proponent of longitude by lunar distance, and
all round nasty bit of work. Enjoy!
