Greetings fellow dialists,

Can anyone please help with information concerning scratch dials? I am
referring to those dials crudely cut into the stonework of church walls,
being often irregular and often with few hour lines and indicating
indefinite times and without numerals. There are many examples on
English churches, although few near me. I have heard that they are to
be found also in mainland Europe but mostly concentrated in certain
countries.

Is there any published information available about such dials in the
mainland of Europe? In what countries do they occur? Are they commoner
in any special region and are there places under the old Western Church
where they do not occur? I am not referring to carefully constructed
ancient dials.

It seems we here in the UK are knowledgeable about our own scratch dials
but less so about those overseas from us. Thanks in advance for any
replies.
