half way between. Beltane is half way between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It is often celebrated as May Day which is May 1 whether that is exactly between the solar events or not. Similar to Christmas which is timed to be close to the solstice but not exactly. Candlemas (Groundhog's day or Brigit's day) is half way between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. I do not recall the one between the summer solstice and the fall equinox. Halloween is the celebration between the fall equinox and the winter solstice.

These markings of the passage of parts of a year are as good a reason as any for a celebration.
