On the subject of time, though in this case geological, you may be
interetsed in the book "The Dating Game" by Cherry Lewis, pub: Cambridge
University Press, 2000, which deals with the gradual unravellling of
geological time as shown in the rocks, principally by Sir Arthur Holmes. 

Note : if you look for this book in the local library, you may well find it
in the romance or even 'smut' section......
