Hi John,
I saw on the photo which despite my efforts I could not find,
a very interesting sundial with a vertical gnomon.
The sundial had the form of an ancient Greek open air theater
with a vertical gnomon in a shape of an Egyptian obelisk
placed in a center of a stage.
Though there was a small confusion of styles (Greek, Egyptian)
but in my eyes quite nice confusion.
We may say that it was a solution contrary to analemmatic
dials because the vertical gnomon was fixed and the terraced
rows rising one behind and above the other play a role
of a different dial for each month.

I will once more try to find the foto. If I fail I will try to make
a drawing to illustrate that idea.

Best regards
