Hi,
My attention was arrested yesterday while reading a review of a new
biography (apparently not a very successful one) of the life of John
Wilmot, 2d Earl of Rochester in the _Economist_ for 3 February, 2001. As
one of the examples of the wild doings of this notorious libertine, the
review mentions the following: "His authentic adventures included the
attempted abduction of an heiress (whom he later married), smashing a
phallic-shaped sundial in the royal gardens during a drunken spree, and a
violent affray with the watch at Epsom in which one of his companions was
killed."
Does anyone have any information about the 'curious' priapic dial
which Rochester smashed?
cheers,
Peter
