Hello all:
Despite the horrible cold I caught traipsing around
Greenwich the last day of my trip to England, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute
of my visit to Europe.
Before the conference, I went to Holland and met
Fer de Vries and his lovely wife and was treated to lunch and a personal
tour of his restored watermill. He showed me his workroom with all his
sundials and collection of sundial literature. After the conference, Tony
Moss took me to his home and showed me his workshop and gave me a short course
on his computer on how to use Adobe Illustrator.
In York England, I was surprised by the huge
turnout of BSS members (over 100 people) at the conference. Everyone was so
friendly! I felt like I was meeting old friends.
For me, the highlights of the
conference were getting to meet the people of the Sundial List
with whom I have corresponded online and exchanging ideas with fellow
stone sundial makers, Harriet James, Ben Jones, and Anton Schmitz.
The conference was very well organized and I
especially enjoyed the walking tour conducted by a professional guide
around beautiful old York.
The best sundial of all that we saw, in my opinion,
was the fabulous bronze sundial of Isaac Newton's bust,
designed by John Davis. (I forget the name of the
artist who crafted the sculpture). A close runner-up was the
precious stained glass sundial by Christopher Daniels.
There were only four of us Americans there,
probably because a trip to Europe is considered to be too expensive. But
my round trip plane ticket from Phoenix only cost 550 dollars!
Hopefully, more Americans will attend future BSS conferences.
Thanks to all those people who did a marvelous job
in organizing the event!
John
