Fellow Shadow Watchers,
BBC Knowledge has just shown a 'Local Heroes'
programme in which Adam Harte-Davis described an unusual sundial made by
one John Canton as an eleven year old. I was so busy writing down his
name that I missed the name of the place.
It sounded rather like a 'double horizontal'.
Does it still exist? How did it worK?
Best Wishes
Tony Moss
P.S. I've added a 'Current Work in Progress' to the Lindisfarne website
into which I'll put jepgs of what is currently on my workbench. At the
moment it's tedious 'dentistry' as I remove the leaded-in wrought-iron
rusted gnomon stumps from the Lectern Dial displayed at the BSS York
Conference. Rather than 'improve' the ancient hourlines etc. I intend to
laserprint good copies on stiff film to be slotted over the gnomon when
required to show how the seven dial faces work.
The main page now shows two views of a recent dial made for a Phontom II
pilot in the USA where the swept wing, by coincidence, is almost exactly
correct for his latitude. Those of you who know the Phantom will have to
excuse the liberties I've taken with the 'sawtooth' leading edge.
