Churches were not always built o a true East/West axis.
 
A church not too far from where I live is built on a nearly true East/West axis but is completely reversed to the norm.  The (liturgical) 'West door is at the East end and the (liturgical) East end is at the West . The church is a Methodist Church which was built in the Anglican style and was built in reverse manner to suit the very sloping site on which it stands.  As far as I am aware there is no sundial.
