About canonical hours, I read that they were called so, while the monks
had to sing their prayers in "canon". Did anybody read this ? More
informations are better than only one.

These hours were established by St Benoit of Nurcie, himself looking to
old militarian roman army times.


vigiles, before sun set 
matines 5h30 aurora
prime (suppressed in 1971 Vatican II) sun set
laudes 7h15
tierce, between morning and midi 9h
sexte 13 h (midi) in French, this time gave the word "sieste" (a little
sleep after eating)
none 13h50
vêpres 17 h sun down
complies 20h30 aurora
midnight
