I think you might also have trouble with ground vibrations revealed by the optical lever. Hey John!...you've invented the world's first combination sundial and seismometer! Perhaps a mirror on top of small gimbal-mounted pendulum would solve the horizontality problem? With its centre defined by split hairs perhaps. ;-) Tony Moss
