Some years ago I constructed an Analemmatic dial at the Exploratorium.  As I remember, we indicated the earliest and latest sunrise and sunset by short lines drawn inward toward appropriate extremes of the dateline.  It seems to me that the same scheme might be used to indicate, in a direct manner, the time of sunrise or sunset at different dates during the year.  If time is marked on the outside of the ellipse, the dates of sunrise or sunset may be marked on the inside.  This makes the reading of time of the sun event direct, rather than by a sighting over a marker on the major axis.  I hope someone tries a dial like this.
