Hi all,

My recent Test Message confirms that my emails are once again appearing on the
SML. Below is one response which, if it got through during the 'black-out'
wasn't reflected back to me. Sorry if it's a repeat.

Thanks for this. I printed out the PDF and have spent some while trying to
visualise the dial you describe in 'solid three dimensions'and have reluctantly
to admit defeat - and in public too in the spirit of our new mode of
communication :-(

A 'cross section' that is little more than a single line at 45° conveys very
little to me I'm afraid as I can make it represent an infinity of things lying
on a narrow plane viewed edgewise. What is needed for my creaking grey matter
is a simple 3D sketch relating the 2D lines in your plan and elevations to
their orientation in space.

In return I'll happily send you a PDF of a 3D concept model which relates the
Equatorial Dial (as a trigon) to vertical, horizontal, polar and north-facing
vertical dial - the idea for which I recently cribbed from Frank Cousins' book
and re-drew in colour. Copies to anyone else on request. This was converted
into a solid model for a recent talk to a Rotary Club 'All about sundials....in
twenty minutes' - tall order! With the help of the model and a bright point
lightsource it was almost achieved....well....the common ones anyway!

Best Wishes

Tony Moss
