Greetings fellow dialists,
Re Grim Reaper sundials the concept of approaching mortality is growing
whiskers with age. For example, when in 1881 Wigham Richardson, the
prominent Tyneside shipbuilder and writer of the appendix on dial making
in Mrs. Gatty's famous book, placed a sundial at the entrance to his
shipyard he painted a motto underneath which read: "Watching these
fleeting hours soon past, remember that which comes at last." These
cheerful words greeted his workmen as they arrived for work each day.
Best, Frank
