I have always thought of gnomes as first wily/wise. The diminutive size of a gnome is shared with a "dwarf" but a "gnome" is also "knowing".
I'm not sure I agree with this. Who else would sit by a pond not just for a day but for YEARS with a rod & line, with no hope whatsoever of catching anything but pneumonia!!! Peter Tandy (London) -
