I don't know the source but I'm interested to have it dated back to 1703 
(or perhaps beyond).  The first two lines were on a replica dial I made 
for a convent in Yorkshire but the 3/16" Whitworth nuts & bolts securing 
the original gnomon contradicted the 'olde worlde' inscription which I 
surmised was a bit of Victorian invention.
