Further to this alignment of the sun, I was told some twelve years ago that a laser shone from the Arc de Triomphe through the Arche de La Defense onto a tall obelisk-like target at Cergy (St Christophe? Pontoise?) (somewhere about 49 02N, 02 03E, so about 10' N and 14' E of the Arc de Triomphe). The Earth's curvature meant that the ray was quite a distance from the ground there - 20-30 m perhaps? (Though the Arc is itself 50 m high so it would almost seem to be pointing downwards in that case ...) Presumably this is the same line (or a continuation, anyway)? Is the sunset also seen through La Defense (more than twice the size, so perhaps from over 2 km away)?
