The Equation of Time is zero today so Christmas is a great time to give,
receive or set sundials. There is less explaining to do.
Today's EQT is pretty close to a true zero as both contributing factors are
close to zero. The ecliptic tilt effect was zero when the declination was
greatest, on the solstice, 21 December. The elliptical orbit effect will be
zero on 2 January at perihelion, when the earth is closest to the sun. The
small residuals cancel each other today. For a better explanation see
www.analemma.com. Never confuse ecliptic with elliptic or analemma with
analemmatic!
Are the dates of perihelion and solstice close at this time by coincidence
or is there some orbital resonance bringing them together? Precession causes
the pole star to change. Does precession also change the close relationship
between perihelion and the solstice and therefore the Equation of Time?
Celebrate the Return of the Sun!
