Many Thanks for this most illuminating response.  I had come to realise that 
all things magnetic were complex up there but those wildly fluctuating 
magnetometer graphs illustrate the point VERY well.  The final dial alignment 
will have to wait for the sun of course but an approximation for photographic 
purposes was my immediate need.

Hopefully we will get a glimpse of good old reliable sunshine and all will be 
well.
