Deep joy on receipt of your numerous responses to the calendar question. Many thanks, situation now much clearer. Plus much amusement at some of the extras including e.g. Alaska and the date line. Now I feel much better!
On another topic, maybe Tony Moss in Spitzbergen could get a star azimuth to give a north direction for his new dial? Perhaps stars might be visible while he is there? It would prolong the chance of a good observation. I believe the old dialists used to use the pole star and not the sun for this purpose, partly because the building where they sought to erect their wall dial intervened between them and the line of the noon sun. Of course the pole star would be a poor choice for an azimuth at that latitude. Over to you, Tony.
