When NASA put the two sundials on the Mars Rovers in January 2004, I though, what a great opportunity to promote sundials and NASS.  I am still continuing to promote sundials and NASS with my educational displays: "See the Sundials on Mars, See the EarthDial" and "Learn about a fascinating hobby, and with a little math, design and make your own sundial", which I talked about at the NASS, Tenafly Conference.  More information at: http://www.planetary.org/mars/earthdial/list.html.

I am getting ready for my next show at my local library, Oct 11th to the 16th 2004.  I just finished a sundial based on the EarthDial design.  "One Book, One Community" where everyone reads the same book: Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam and the movie October Sky, a true story and now the sundial is on display at the library.  I used a model rocket for the gnomon, which will cast a shadow on October 4th, the anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, which was in 1957.  Pictures on request.

I am now running out of time and looking for volunteers to design paper sundials for the three vertical walls and horizontal surfaces in the courtyard next to the library.  I want to demonstrate the uniqueness of your latitude and longitude and wall declinations.  I am looking for dialist in the United States and around the world to design sundials for the Elizabethtown Public Library with a library theme.

Years ago, I designed a sundial with the help from someone from Portugal and though that was interesting.  It takes me a while to make a sundial, so I though maybe if I invited the world to make the demonstration sundials, there would be dialist with more experience.  I am just looking for some basic sundials with different mottos and graphics that I can tape to the walls or horizontal surfaces. The more the better and I believe it would look great.  October 16th would probably be the day that I would display them.  If you would like to be part of this experiment, and have the time, send me your files.

The Shadows program is OK or a PDF file drawing up to 36" square will work.  Just E-mail me the file.  Any help would be appreciated on such a short notice.

Thanks very much,
