Hello all:

For the cupola fundial faces, in my design, I've tried to imitate the design of a typical easy to-read clock tower clock face, with a white background and black hourlines and numerals.  Many old outdoor clock faces were made from painted porcelain.

I want the painted steel faces to be very weather-proof and I'm thinking that either porcelain or powder coating a steel plate would work the best.  I do not have any experience with powder coating, but my research indicates that it might be the most durable of all painting methods. When we visited the metal shop in Newark that Robert Adzema uses, I noted that Robert said that he powder coats some of his sundial sculptures.  Evidently, powdercoating is used for a wide variety of outdoor metal objects including lawn furniture, barbeques, signs, automobiles, etc.  The paint is applied in powder form to the metal plate using electromagnic charges and is then baked onto the steel in an oven.

Have any of you ever tried powder coating paint for the faces of your sundials?  Where did you have it done  (an automotive paint shop? sign shop? or some other place?)

p.s.  I've finished the design of the cupola showing one of the faces.  If anyone would like to see it please contact me off-List and I'll send you a pdf.

Thanks

John
