Dear Dialists,

some years ago I informed you on this way that the Recklinghausen observatory is planning to establish a horizontal observatory on a mine dump. Recklinghausen is located in the Ruhr district, the industrial heart in western Germany.

Yesterday a helicopter took the obelisk for the first item, a giant horizontal sundial, to the dump´s top. The stainless iron obelisk is 8,5 m tall and has a weight of 1,6 t. The diameter of the sundial is 60 m. Here a first look on the obelisk:

The Recklinghausen observatory ( www.sternwarte-recklinghausen.de ) offers a lot of information on their various websites, sometimes also in English language.
