does look pretty good considering its age.

Well, as you know we don't have your sort of sun here in the UK (!) -
though it was 84 degrees yesterday (for the one day!) - but how about this
oak dial on a church near me. The dial's thought to date back to around
the mid to late 1800s and possibly earlier. The planks are separating and
shrinking but it's still there and quite readable too and it's relatively
accurate.
I suppose that seasoned oak is the answer - and no Arizona sun!
